The Hong Kong Wind Philharmonia is a distinguished
group of 50 Hong Kong-based professional musicians specializing
in the performance of music written for wind orchestra and a
variety of other works arranged for instruments of the wind
family. The chief goal is to perform music of the highest
professional caliber for a broad-based and diverse audience in
Hong Kong.
The musicians of the Hong Kong Wind Philharmonic, all of whom
live in Hong Kong, have studied abroad and most have held
professional jobs around the world before returning to
contribute their talents to the cultural life of Hong Kong.
Their dedication is reflected in the fact that nearly all of the
members are also experienced teachers.
Wind music is a traditional adjunct to the school
curriculum in Hong Kong, and another goal of this organization
is to both inspire and educate Hong Kong's future musicians
through performances and workshops. Young musicians were well
represented in the audience of the wind orchestras debut
concert and, hopefully, the bands performances will encourage
Hong Kong students to seek a high level of excellence in their
musical studies.
The group has used the excitement created by its past
concerts to successfully launch the Hong Kong Youth Wind
Philharmonia in 2003 and the Hong Kong Junior Wind Philharmonia
in 2004. Members of both of these groups are guided and trained
by members of the Hong Kong Wind Philharmonic.
Music
Director of the Hong Kong Wind Philharmonic is Jerry F. Junkin,
Conductor of the Dallas Wind Symphony and Director of Bands and
Professor of Conducting at The University of Texas at Austin.
Performances conducted by Prof. Junkin have been heard by
millions of listeners through radio broadcasts and on compact
disc recordings. Performances under his direction have won the
praise of many leading composers, including Gunther Schuller,
Karel Husa, William Kraft, and Michael Colgrass.
