Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble (Canada)

 


The Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble of Vancouver, Canada consists of brass, woodwind and percussion musicians dedicated to performing the new, the unusual, the challenging and the traditional in wind band/ensemble repertoire. This community-based ensemble includes professional musicians and gifted amateurs alike in its membership. The Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble produces annually a four-concert series of the highest caliber performed at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam, British Columbia. In addition, the group frequently contributes its time to band music festivals and clinics. Now in its 22nd year, the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble has received national and international recognition as an outstanding ensemble of its kind. It has recently performed a concert of Dutch repertoire as part of Dutch  Music Week that was recorded and broadcast on CBC’s Westcoast Performance.

In conjunction with its performance at the WASBE Conference in Singapore in July of 2005, the band will release its fourth CD. Locally, the PSWE is know for supporting music education with its program of school concerts and workshops in addition to its Annual Youth Soloist Competition, now in its third year.   

The Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble is conducted by Marc Crompton, who teaches music at Saint George’s School in Vancouver. He is in his fifth year as director, after positions as Associate Director, Percussion Section Principal and Percussion Section player going back to 1984. He is active as a clinician, guest conductor, adjudicator and a freelance percussionist. He is Vice-President of the British Columbia Band Association and teaches at the West Coast Amateur Musicians’ Society Summer Camp. He has also directed bands at the Courtenay Youth Music Centre and has been director of the Cambie Street Brass Band. He is a Past-President of the British Columbia Band Association (BCBA) and is a current and active member of the British Columbia Music Educators’ Association (BCMEA), World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) and the College Band Directors’ Association (CBDNA). He has had articles published in various periodicals, including the  BCMEA  Journal,  Canadian Winds  Magazine and the WASBE Journal.
