Republic of Korea Navy Symphonic Band

 



Since its foundation in April 1946, the Republic of Korea Navy Symphonic Band has been one of Korea's leading wind orchestras. During the 1950s and 1960s, the band helped keep the Korean people optimistic and added much to their patriotic spirit by providing many inspirational performances. Since 1955, the band has accompanied the Naval Academy's Midshipmen sent annually overseas to Japan, South-East Asia, North America, and Europe. The band was selected to perform in support of the 1986 Asian Game, the 1988 Olympics, and the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup. As a musical ambassador for Korea, the band performed at the "World Marching Band Concert" in Japan in 2000, undertook a joint concert with the Navy Band of North China in 2003, and played an invitational concert for the people of Shenyang, China in 2004. In commemoration of 50th anniversary of the Korean-American alliance, the band undertook a tour, playing joint concerts to demonstrate the firm fellowship and thanks of the people of Korea for the security of their country. Since 1998, the band has received a great deal of attention nationally and internationally by producing and distributing compact disc recordings of its annual concerts.   

The band's conductor, Lieutanent Commander Joon Hyung Park, started his professional career in 1992 as a flutist with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra. He began his military career in 1993 as bandmaster at the Jinhae Naval Base and became bandmaster for the Navy Support Department in 1994. LCDR Park has conducted extensively internationally including at the World Marching Band Concert in Bladivostok, Russia in 1996 and the Japanese Military Music Festival in 2000. In 2004, he was invited as guest conductor to the Arona Music School's ceremonial concert in Teneriffe, Spain. He also conducts biennialy at the World Peace Fanfare in Wonju, Korea. He is a life member of WASBE.
