William Johnson

William Johnson has been Professor of Music at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California USA since 1966. He is presently coordinator of instrumental music and conducts the University Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. He has been a guest conductor, lecturer and clinician throughout the United States, Japan, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Israel, Korea and Singapore. He served as Secretary of WASBE from 1987 to 1991 and President from 1993 to 1995. He was the Conference Chairperson for the 9th Conference held in San Luis Obispo in 1999. He is currently the Chairperson of the WASBE Foundation. Johnson is a graduate of both Indiana University and The University of Michigan. While at Michigan, he studied conducting with Dr. William D. Revelli and Prof. Elizabeth Green.

Conductors of young ensembles often struggle with the challenges of tone production, intonation, balance, blend and other fundamentals of ensemble sound development. This session will explore and demonstrate some proven strategies in both art and science that are designed to bring out the inherent beauty of sound conceived by the composer of the works that we perform.
