In-town Travel Tips
The WASBE2007.com site describes in very helpful detail how to get to Killarney. Once you arrive in Killarney, you should be aware that the conference venue is a distance south of Killarney Town (Centre) on Muckross Road. If you are travelling to Killarney by bus or train, you may want to take advantage of some of the in-town transportation options available. Start by checking out the town map posted in the depot to help you get your bearings.
The Gleneagle Hotel offers a shuttle from Killarney Town to the hotel that leaves five times a day from the entrance to the town Car Park (just a few blocks west of the Bus and Train stations). If you are staying at Scotts Gardens Hotel or the Great Southern Hotel, the shuttle is next to and opposite those hotels respectively. It leaves from Town at 10:45, 11:45 (exc. Sundays, 12:30), 14:15, 16:00 and 17:15. The price is €1.50 per person each way.
Alternately, taxi service is available. The major queue in town is nearby that car park, right in front of the Burger King on College Square. There are three companies that offer service in Killarney. Finally, the distance is walkable in about 15 or 20 minutes if you are not dragging luggage.
For those of you not staying at Gleneagle or Brehon, you can use these same options to get to the Conference venue each day.
Afternoon Delights In and Around Killarney
Deciding what to do with that nice break in the schedule Wednesday afternoon? Here are some ideas:
- Check out the trade exhibition in the Mangerton Suite (between the concert hall and the ballroom).
- If you like walking or cycling, then Killarney National Park is for you. If you follow Muckross Road south from the conference area, you can follow walking paths that take you to Muckross House (if you are there around 6 p.m., you may even see a fringe festival concert). If you go north instead, turn left at the second set of traffuc lights to walk to Ross Castle. In both cases, allow at least a couple of hours for your walk and prepare adequately for all possible weather. If you are cycling, you can go further afield, perhaps all the way around the lower lake. Bikes are available for rental at various locations, including one just a couple of minutes south of the Gleneagle. You can also drive or take a horse-drawn carriage ride to either (or both) of the park venues.
- If you are running out of clean clothes, there is a laundromat in the town centre near the Dunnes store. Or you could simply purchase new clothes at Dunnes for affordable prices.
- If you have not gone shopping in Killarney town, this is the time. Either take the 15–20 minute walk to town centre or grab the shuttle that leaves from the Gleneagle periodically (see the Guest Services desk for times) for €1.50.
- Bus tours of the region are also available, but do require that you depart the hotel at 10 a.m. If you want a more intimate experience, take the Dingle Peninsula tour from Deros, as they use a smaller 15-seat bus, giving most people a window seat to see all the views.
- Sleep so that you are ready for the rest of the week!
