Call For Proposals

The Artistic Planning Committee (APC) of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) 2009 Conference invites the submission of proposals for presentations of research and creative projects concerning the application of music performance and teaching in the setting of symphonic bands and ensembles. The 15th Biennial Conference of WASBE will be held in Cincinnati, Ohio July 5-11, 2009.

Poster Sessions, Discussions, and Research Presentations with topics relevant to the planning, preparation, and performance of band music are welcome. Further topics including literature, repertory, technology, educational research, composition and arranging techniques are also welcome.

The following is a list of sample topics for sessions, which would also be appropriate for the conference. Advocacy, Chamber music, Conducting, Copyright, Historical context of wind band development internationally, Marketing and Concert Promotion, Motivation, Choosing appropriate literature and repertoire, International promotion and sharing of literature from various regions, Regionally significant literature, Rehearsal Techniques, Recruiting and Retention of students or community members, Research related to pedagogy and performance, Teaching Artistry through Performance, Teaching Rhythm, Theory and Composition.

Poster Sessions

Applicants can present their research projects that are either completed or in-progress at a special poster session during the conference. Upon request, mentors can be assigned to provide in-depth feedback to each presenter.

Discussion Sessions

Applicants can lead or participate in discussion sessions and panel discussions regarding their topics at special sessions throughout the conference. Discussion sessions will vary from 20 minutes to 90 minutes dependent upon the topic and best fit for the conference as determined by the Artistic Planning Committee.

Research Presentations

These sessions will occur throughout the conference. They may either be tied to the repertoire and performances of the organizations selected to perform during the conference or may be topics of general interest to the conference participants.

Proposal Guidelines

Members of the Artistic Planning Committee (APC) will review and select appropriate proposals. The WASBE APC Education Chair will then submit the finalized proposals for conference sessions at the 2009 Cincinnati Conference. Some authors may be requested to revise their proposals according to feedback from the APC. Acceptance for presentation will be subject to the decision of the WASBE APC. Please note that it is not a requirement to be an Individual Member of WASBE at the time of acceptance of submissions. However, at the time of presenting it is expected that each presenter will have 1.) Registered for the conference and 2.) Become a member or student member of WASBE.

Proposals for the sessions should be written in English, and include the following:

  1. Name of author/presenter.
  2. Email address of author/presenter.
  3. Affiliation.
  4. Address of author/presenter.
  5. Title of presentation.
  6. Indication of whether the submission is submitted for a Poster Session, Discussion Session, or Research Presentation or may be considered for any of the above. 

  7. An abstract of 400-500 words (excluding references) which should include these five items:
    1. the theoretical background of the presentation
    2. the purpose (aim) of the presentation
    3. the method of information collection
    4. a synthesis of the content
    5. conclusions and implications of the presentation.
  8. Audio/Visual requirements for the presentation.

No monetary awards are available for presenters.
