2011 Conference Bands Selected
The APC (Artistic Planning Committee) is already planning the WASBE Conference 2011 in Chiayi City, Taiwan. (See further articles on this page for other news.) The following bands have been selected to participate in the 2011 Conference:
Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra - Norwegian National Wind Orchestra
- National Youth Wind Ensemble of Great Britain
- Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville Wind Symphony
- Uniao Filharmonica do Troviscal - Portugal
- Tom Lee Hong Kong Youth NeoWinds Orchestra
- Osaka College of Music Wind Orchestra - Japan
- The Philharmonic Winds of Singapore
- China Youth Corp Wind Ensemble - Taiwan
Four additional bands have been invited but their participation has not yet been confirmed.
The International Youth Wind Orchestra (IYWO), formed each two years for the WASBE Conference, will also perform.
Hauswirth & Cochran Honored at Midwest

Felix Hauswirth received the Midwest Clinic International Award on 16 December 2009 at the 63rd Midwest Clinic in Chicago for his significant contributions to music education internationally. Hauswirth, who served as WASBE President from 1997 to 2001, currently teaches wind band conducting at the Music Conservatory in Basel, Switzerland, the State Academy in Trossingen, Germany, and the Istituto Superiore Europeo Bandistico in Trento, Italy. He is conductor of the Baden-Württemberg Youth Wind Ensemble in Germany and the Zug Wind Orchestra in Switzerland.
James Cochran received the Midwest Clinic Music Industry Award at the Music Industry Reception on 15 December 2009 at the 63rd Midwest Clinic in Chicago for his outstanding support of music education through his work in the music industry. The WASBE Board member and President of Shattinger Music is one the world’s foremost authorities on wind band and chamber music. He is a member of the Artistic Planning Committee for the 2011 WASBE Conference, at which he will present a series of repertoire sessions.
Call for Compositions — 15th WASBE Conference
The Artistic Planning Committee
for the 2011 WASBE Conference is seeking original compositions for wind
band/ensemble for concerts and repertoire sessions. Composers and publishers
wishing to have works considered for a concert are invited to send scores and
recordings to the Odd Terje Lysebo so that they arrive before 30 June 2010. Scores may be sent either as hard copies or in PDF format and recordings either
as CDs or MP3 files.
Composers and publishers wishing to have works considered for a repertoire session are invited to send scores and CD recordings to Jim Cochran so that they arrive before 31 March 2011.
Call for Proposals — 15th WASBE Conference
The Artistic
Planning Committee for the 2011 WASBE Conference invites submissions of
proposals for presentations at the 15th Biennial Conference, which
will be held in Chiayi City, Taiwan from the 3rd to the 9th of July 2011. The 30th Anniversary Conference motto is: Preparing
for the Future by Building on the Past.
Presentations may take the form of lectures, panel discussion, workshops or clinics and should be no more than 50 minutes in length. Any topics related to symphonic wind bands/ensembles and their repertoire are welcome, including rehearsal techniques, artistry in performance, appropriate repertoire at all grade levels, regionally significant repertoire, programming, marketing and concert promotion, use of technology, composition and arranging techniques, and research related to pedagogy and performance.
