2005 Conference CDs

Mark Morette of Mark Custom Recording Services reports that CDs of the performances by Frysk Fanfare Orchestra, Univ. of Florida, West Winds, Republic of Korea Navy, Singapore Youth Wind Orchestra, Stadtharmonie Zürich Oerlikon-Seebach, Singapore Armed Forces and Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble are now shipping. The other recordings (Senzoku Gakuen, IYWO, Hong Kong, Chinese Youth Corps, N. Rhine–Westphalia) cannot be released at this time because of difficulties surrounding copyright releases. Mark Custom continues to work on this problem.

The Memorandum, which will be in force for six years and may be renewed by mutual consent, was signed in the pursuit of developing music education and active participation in music-making internationally, and for the purpose of disseminating knowledge that will benefit and serve music educators and music professionals globally. Major Nordic Music Resource Posted

At the 2003 WASBE Conference, Dr. Mark Lammers offered WASBE his 1991 catalogue of selected Nordic Instrumental Music for College and Universities for posting on our web site. There were no more remaining printed copies (save for the one he gave the web editor) of this annotated listing of over 1400 titles, but he still had the original databases. We are pleased to announce that you can now access this resource in the Resources section of the main WASBE web site. We are certainly interested in updating this resource, but it will require a lot of volunteer time to do it. If you are interested in helping us maintain this unique resource, please contact the Web Editor.

Egil Gundersen Awarded Honorary Life Membership

At the second Annual General Meeting at the recent WASBE Conference in Singapore, retiring Treasurer Egil Gundersen of Norway was awarded an Honorary Life Membership in WASBE. Outgoing President Dennis Johnson spoke about Egil's long and dedicated service to WASBE, for which Egil received a long standing ovation. Egil served as Treasurer from 1981–83 and 1985–2005 (he is still doing the job until we can get the bank accounts transferred). His farewell message will appear in the September 2005 WASBE Newsletter.

Conference Archives Available

A wonderful assortment of articles, reviews and pictures were collected during the 2005 Conference in Singapore. These articles, plus materials that we will add in the coming weeks, will form an archive that we know you will enjoy. You can visit the archives (now sorted by the day of the session or concert), using the buttons along the top of the browser window to change dates.

We have recently added the speaking notes and repertoire list handout from Tim Reynish's brown bag session (thanks to Tim for making these available).

We have been informed that the Singapore Committee will also be updating their web site with material from the Conference, so check out wasbe2005.com as well.

Board Member Hultgren to Receive Award

Ralph Hultgren (Australia), a member of the WASBE Board of Directors and co-chair of the WASBE Schools Network, has been selected to receive the 2005 Midwest Clinic International Award in recognition of his international contributions to music education. The presentation will occur on Friday, December 16, appropriately enough during a high school band concert at the conference. Congratulations, Ralph!

(On-site registration begins 09 July.) If you're still undecided, you want to check the regularly-updated Conference Website, which recently added the repertoire being performed by the conference bands (check the individual band profiles). Also available are profiles of some of the Outreach Bands which will be coming over to participate in the Outreach Programmes as well as the Conference activities. More profiles will be added in the weeks to come, so make sure you visit www.wasbe2005.com!

Also, concert ticket sales are now open to the general public at www.sistic.com.sg. Student concession tickets and bulk orders are also possible at a reduced rate.

If you've already decided to go to the conference and would like to be a writer of some of the daily updates we hope to post to the WASBE Web Site during the conference, please contact Web Publisher Anthony Reimer at wasbe@jazzace.ca as soon as possible. Yes, you too could be a WASBE Blogger!

Finally, the Singapore Conference Committee has been informed that the Marina Mandarin will no longer be an Official Hotel for the 2005 Conference, as they have decided to undergo major renovations during the Conference period and will be shut down. More details are available on the WASBE 2005 Conference web site, including information for those who had already booked a conference package involving the Marina Mandarin.

Budiansky Article Follow-up

Stephen Budiansky, whose opinion article on School Band Music was reprinted in the March WASBE Newsletter, has posted a follow-up article on his personal web site. He writes, "When I set out to write a short and slightly amusing article for the Washington Post about what I — as a parent and an amateur musician — felt was wrong with the school music repertoire, little did I realize that I would end up feeling like someone who had just done the 800 yard dash through a live mine field. ... I thought perhaps I'd hear from one or two readers. In fact, literally nothing I have written in 25 years of journalism has generated such an outpouring of passionate responses."

March Newsletter Update

Have You Received It?

If you are a current member and have not received your copy of the March Newsletter by Monday, May 23, please send an e-mail message with your name, country and membership number (if known) to nonews at jazzace dot ca (we had to remove the clickable link due to excess spam). We believe the problem has been solved that caused some members in the USA to have their newsletter sent out as late as Sunday, May 15, but we want to make sure. Please let us know.

Newsletter Delivery Charges

Some members in the Scandinavian countries have reported that they are being asked to pay delivery charges by the company (TNT Mailfast) that delivered their March WASBE Newsletter to them. We have contacted BookSurge, the company responsible for printing and delivering this issue of the newsletter, and they are aware of the problem. We do not expect further difficulties. If you were adversely affected, please let us know by following the steps below:

If you are sent an invoice in the mail requesting payment for newsletter delivery charges:

If you are asked for payment at the time the newsletter is delivered:

Thank you for your assistance and patience in this matter.

Boletín de Noticas — Español

The WASBE Publications Committee is pleased to announce the publication of the first Spanish Edition of the WASBE Newsletter. Thanks to the interpretation work of Glenn Garridos (USA), the majority of the March 2005 newsletter is available in Spanish (the remaining items are included in English). Any current member may download a copy from our web site, just like with the English Edition.

Members in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries were mailed the Spanish Edition in late March.
