Composition for Symphonic Band by Axel Ruoff

A consortium headed by the German WASBE Section will commission a work for symphonic band from Axel Ruoff. It will be premiered by the Heilbronn Philharmonic Winds during the 2nd German Wind Forum in Stuttgart, Germany, on 3 March 2007. An invitation to participate in the consortium is being offered to all WASBE members by the German WASBE Section.

Description

The work will be scored for symphonic band, be grade 5 in difficulty and have a duration of 10 to 12 minutes. At this time, no title has been selected. The piece will be published by Strube-Verlag in Munich, Germany.

Commission Fee

There is no minimum contribution.

Every consortium member who contributes a minimum of € 50.00 / US$ 70.00 / GBP 40.00 will be mentioned in the printed edition of the score and will receive a copy of the score signed by the composer.

Individuals and legal entities may take part in the consortium.

The deadline for participating in the consortium is 1 September 2006.

Those interested in supporting this project are requested to complete the commissioning form [PDF; 60K] and send it to the German WASBE Section. Participation in the consortium takes effect with the crediting of the contribution to the account of the German WASBE Section.

The Composer

Axel Ruoff was born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1957. He studied composition, music theory and piano in Stuttgart, Helsinki and Kassel from 1975 to 1979. He passed his final examinations in music theory and piano with distinction and took his exam in composition in 1984. Between 1985 and 1987, Ruoff studied in Tokyo, having received a scholarship from the Japanese Ministry of Culture. In addition, he worked as a guest lecturer at different Japanese universities. Currently, he teaches at the Stuttgart State University of Music and Performing Arts.

Among his many honours, Ruoff lists a scholarship from the Baden-Wurttemberg Arts Foundation and several prizes in competitions by the Baden-Wurttemberg Music Council. He was a prizewinner in the competition "Valentino Bucchi" in Rome and in the international composition contest "Pro Loco Corciano" in Perugia, Italy. In 1988, he was selected for the Forum of Young German Composers in Berlin. His works have been performed at such important Festivals as the St Petersburg Spring, the Tokyo Summer, and the Budapest Spring. Many leading soloists and orchestras including the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the South German Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, the Choir of the South German Radio, have recorded his works.

His catalogue of works includes compositions for diverse genres, including solo instrumental works, compositions for orchestra, works for the theatre, vocal and chamber music. His compositions show a wide stylistic variety from sparkling humour to deepest seriousness. So far, he has composed three pieces for wind band – the Concerto for Cello and Symphonic Band, the Concerto for Piano No.1 and Inferno, for which he was awarded the first prize in the competition Pro Loco Corciano in Perugia, Italy in 1992.
