Discussion Forum

The WASBE Schools Network has just opened up a discussion forum for WASBE and non-WASBE members engaged in the education of youth through performing in wind bands. Children come to playing a band instrument in many different ways, usually depending on where in the world they live, and it is in recognition of that fact that this site has been established. It is our aim to encourage a vibrant exchange of ideas.

In North America, band instruments are taught in schools, and most schools have some type of instrumental ensemble within the school day. Traditionally in Europe pupils first go through private lessons and then become members of the local youth bands present in most countries. In Australia, a variety of systems are employed across the nation, but band is a centre piece of children’s artistic development in schools. Other places have other approaches or combinations of the above.

What happens where you live? Tells us. How is your curriculum structured? Who selects your repertoire? How are you trained to work with and conduct young, school aged musicians? What teaching strategies have you developed personally that may assist someone on the other side of the world? Tell us about materials and pedagogy that has assisted you.

In the spirit of WASBE, our methods of educating our youth can only be strengthened by sharing the strengths and weaknesses of our methods and materials. The new WSN discussion forum is a way of pooling our resources and sharing our ideas. We are sure that there will be many other topics covered as our membership grows and discussion heats up.

If you are interested in becoming a member of this online, world-wide community, please visit http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/wasbeschools/. There is no membership cost or current restriction of membership. This is not intended as a commercial enterprise, and blatant use of the site for commercial uses will be strongly discouraged. The prime purpose is to unite and strengthen the world band community through the sharing of resources of band music educators. We hope to see you on line!

Marc Crompton is the moderator for the site, and he will ensure quality and integrity are the benchmarks of this new initiative.
