Wind Band and Wind Ensemble Literature: An International Survey
The World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) was established in 1981 to promote the international exchange of wind band and wind ensemble literature. Since then, conductors and performers have discovered a vast new world of repertoire, reaching far beyond their national borders. From a national perspective, the amount of quality wind band/ensemble literature available often appears rather limited, but from an international perspective, the volume of quality literature is impressively large. The amount of quality literature composed since 1981 alonemuch of it through the efforts of WASBE and its membersis quite substantial.
Although one may certainly speak today of an international repertoire for symphonic wind bands and wind ensembles, one still associates most repertoire with the country of the composer. The Suites for Military Band, Opus 28 by Gustav Holst and Dionysiaques, Opus 62 by Florent Schmitt are performed around the world, but one still considers the former to be British music and the latter French. Thus, WASBE intends to provide repertoire listings at this web site according to countries.
As you may surmise, this is a massive undertaking, so it will take time to organise and post on this website. (Members who wish to volunteer to assist with this project would be most appreciated!) When it is done, this area will be available to WASBE members only! Meanwhile, there have been a number of recent articles in the WASBE Newsletter on national music history, so members can check back issues online for some of this information (click on News/Home above, then pick Newsletter from the submenu that appears below it).
